I need a Wii

April 28, 2006

So in yet another triumph of clueless Japanese PR people, the new Nintendo console, codenamed Revolution, has been named: Wii. What was wrong with the name Revolution? It summed up the the console pretty accurately, the revolutionary nature of the controller and the backward compatibility of the downloadable games from Nintendo, Sega and NEC. Instead, Nintendo have gone with a name that will have unfunny people like myself going into game stores and saying things like "I need a Wii" and "Is this the right place to come for a Wii?". The press release from the Nintendo website clearly reveals the damage-control exercise that the English-speaking departments of Nintendo are having to go through:

Introducing… Wii.
As in "we."
While the code-name "Revolution" expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer.
Wii will break down that wall that separates video game players from everybody else.
Wii will put people more in touch with their games… and each other. But you’re probably asking: What does the name mean?
Wii sounds like "we," which emphasises this console is for everyone.
Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii.
Wii has a distinctive "ii" spelling that symbolizes both the unique controllers and the image of people gathering to play.
And Wii, as a name and a console, brings something revolutionary to the world of video games that sets it apart from the crowd.
So that’s Wii. But now Nintendo needs you.
Because, it’s really not about you or me.
It’s about Wii.
And together, Wii will change everything.

Pretty awful to say the least. But to be honest they could call it the Nintendo Piss Machine and I’d still buy it on the day of release!

This Wii crap just sad. The Inquirer puts it well: “….with a complete straight face, the marketing department of Nintendo has really opted for the word that in Scotland means ’small’ and in the UK means ‘to urinate’.”

  2. I like the name myself. I was never happy with Revolution and was thankful that that was only the code name.
It’s a catchy name and will stick in peoples mind…possibly for the wrong reason yeah haha
Have you seen the new NWii Wiimote? Not much has changed, the under belly ‘B’ button, its longer but most strikingly is they uncovered the speaker set in the Wiimote.

  6. Dont take my word for it, but an article for forbes.com has a marketing guy from Sega saying that Wii wont be over $200. Nice!
“Bet on the Wii will selling for less than $200,” says Scott Steinberg, vice president of marketing for Sega). “Prices for both the Microsoft and Sony machines are higher due to their heavy-duty processing power, and the PS3 will also feature Sony’s next generation Blu-Ray DVD drive.”
$200 dollars could get you a Wii, and some change that can go to buying a few TurboGrafx and Hudson games. Less then $2 each. Why bother with anything else?
